Mandal, Norway – 7/27/23

We were not able to get into Skagen, Denmark or Arandal, Norway as scheduled due to 49-45 mph winds and so the cruise ship ended up going to another town, Mandal, Norway. The town is named after the valley (and river) in which it is located - Mandalen Valley - and is known for its narrow and idyllic streets and beaches.   it was a cute little town with an nice view (hiked up steps to get to the top) and a local church.

Most coastal churches have the ship hanging in their interior to honor the fishermen. A votive ship, sometimes called a church ship, is a ship model displayed in a church. As a rule, votive ships are constructed and given as gifts to the church by seamen and ship builders.  


It is always fun to go into the grocery stores and see how and what products on the shelves.  This little market caught my eye and I was curious to see what they offered.  I got a chuckle out of what I saw on the shelves...




Actually only one small shelf with oriental offerings.

 Alesund, Norway The town is a sea  port  and is noted for its concentration of  Art Nouveau   architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904 .  (according to Wiki -  the Art Nouveau style was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous (winding or curvey)  lines of plants and flowers.  Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism (liveliness) and movement, often given by asymmetry or  whiplash lines  (the curvy lines mentioned above)  , and the use of modern materials, particularly iron, glass, ceramics and later concrete, to create unusual forms and larger open spaces.  The reason that I gave the specifics for this Art Nouveau style predominant in Aalesund is that I wasn't struck by this as we wandered the city.  It really didn't seem unique to this style (for me).  Look at the pictures taken after our tour and see what you think) We took a tour whic...

 Oslo, Norway July 25, 2023 Beautiful docking spot right in the heart of Oslo cultural center.  From the ship we could see the Opera House and Munch Museum as well as the Oslo skyline.  We did have a planned tour today which took us to  1. Oslo City Hall (built  1931 to 1950)  where they award the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10 (Nobel's birthday) each year. 2.  Frogner Park  - a large park located a few minutes' walk away from the city centre. This is the biggest and best-known park in Norway, with a large collection of sculptures by  Gustav Vigeland. 3.  Holmenkollen  ski jump -   the area has been a ski recreation area since the late 19th century, with its famous  ski jumping hill , the  Holmenkollbakken , hosting competitions since 1892.  The jump itself was rebuilt in  again for the 2011 World Championships.
